The indie author community was in a tizzy yesterday about an article that was published in the Huffington Post. I didn't find out about it until I got home from work, and when I asked to be filled in...boy, was I. An indie author friend suggested I do a podcast of the article and my thoughts on it. This is that podcast.
I do want to address the apology the article's author issued after the backlash the article itself created (posted below).
To the author...it should not have taken social media being in an uproar to open your eyes. As a writer, you should have done your research and seen how much self-publishing has grown and how much a part of the industry it has become before ever writing your article. Yes, you were living in a bubble, but it doesn't matter. You still talked down to a large group of hard-working writers with a dream. It shouldn't matter if they Canadian, American, or any other nationality. They are people, just like you, and didn't deserved to be talked down to or figuratively spit on. I hope you learn from this and that your apology is truly genuine, and not just a cover-your-ass statement because your article blew up in your face. Either way, there are going to be a lot of indie writers upset with you from a long time to come. It's something you're going to have to live with, and try to repair your reputation from.
To all my indie writer friends, chin up. We know our worth, and an article can't (and shouldn't) take that away from us. I'm not saying forgive and forget (because, let's face it, that article was a slap in the face that pissed all of us off), but let's put this behind us, and prove all the doubters wrong in 2017. May the new year bring many blessings, and the realization of your goals and dreams. And know that there are other indie authors standing with you.
